|Yesterday the government said they’d increase the quota to 1000 places in two years time. It’s not enough and it is too slow. I’ve written a press release, a numbers piece for Radio NZ and a slightly harsher piece for The Spinoff. Yes: it’s something but it’s not enough.
Now they’re citing costs of resettling people, at the same time as allocating an extra $20bn to upgrading military equipment and flirting with tax cuts.
Along with Amnesty International and ActionStation we’re going to come togther to let the government know we expect more. Tomorrow, Wednesday 15 June at 1.30pm there will be events in Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin where we’ll bring along shoes to represent the hundreds of lives we could have helped, but which our callous government simply chose not to. Please bring a pair of shoes!
Here are the event details:
Wednesday 15 June at 1.30pm at the following places:
Auckland – St Patrick’s Square at 43 Wyndham Street.
Wellington – Parliament.
Dunedin – Michael Woodhouse’s office, 333 Princes Street, Dunedin.
It would be wonderful to see you there. We can do better and we’re not backing down.
Murdoch and the Doing Our Bit crew.
